Our summer exhibition
To Find One's Way
The artist friends Ottilia Adelborg and Hilma af Klint
Two women. A life-long friendship. An artistic breakthrough.
Ottilia Adelborg (1855-1936) andHilma af Klint (1862-1944) met at the Royal Academy of Art 1882. As women they were pioneers, who challenged the prevailing norm. This made them stronger together and they developed a companionship which would turn into a life-long friendship.
Through art, letters and personal notes, we follow their shared journey from the years at the Academy to a life shaped by creativity, courage, and independance. A story about female artists, friendship and the desire to break new ground.
The exhibition is produced by Dalarnas Museum in Falun and the Ottilia Adelborg Museum in Gagnef, where it was first shownin 2021. Now that the Hilma af Klint's Atelier has found its place at the old vicarage in Adelsö, it feels natural to revive the exhibition here in an adapted form for this new setting.

Entrance: SEK 100 for adults, SEK 80 for members of the Association, SEK 50 for young between 7 and 18
The ticket is valid the whole summer.

Hilma af Klint and Ottilia Adelborg – On Textiles, Folk Art, and Abstraction
A talk at Hilma af Klint's studio by Ariane Serck, a French-Swedish art historian and researcher. She has contributed research and new findings for the retrospective exhibition on Hilma af Klint, which is being held this summer at the Grand Palais in Paris.
Ariane Serck will present her research on Hilma af Klint and Ottilia Adelborg, focusing on their inspiration from textile art, traditional rural craftsmanship, and folk traditions.
The lecture will be held in Swedish.
Time: 1:15 p.m. to approximately 3:00 p.m.
After the lecture, coffee and refreshments will be served for those who wish to stay and continue the conversation.
The lecture will take place in the newly inaugurated artists' studio in the red barns above Hilma af Klint's studio.

Cyanotype Workshop at Hilma af Klint's Atelier
Discover the magical world of cyanotype with the Hilma af Klint Studio Association as your host!
Spend a night on Adelsö, the place that was so significant to Hilma af Klint and where she formed a deep connection with nature, plants, and flowers. You will be introduced to the history of cyanotype and its links to photography, science, and women's history.
Using cotton paper coated with iron salts and the sun's UV light, we will create unique images through a process that is simple, experimental, and fascinating. On the second day, you will also be introduced to toning cyanotypes with botanical dyes—an exciting technique that gives the blue images new expressions and subtle variations in color.
We will work in and around the beautiful barn next to Hilma af Klint's studio, drawing inspiration from the surrounding garden and natural landscape. After two creative days, you will return home with your own handmade artworks, new skills, and inspiration from the unique setting and studio on Adelsö.
Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic processes, renowned for its rich, distinctive blue tones. The technique was invented by the astronomer John Herschel. Anna Atkins (1799–1871) was a British photographer and botanist. Her best-known work, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, published in 1843, was the first book ever printed and illustrated entirely with photographic images. Like Hilma af Klint, she chose to follow her own path and shared interests in botany, science, and image-making.

Hilma af Klint Safari, meeting up at Munsö Church
Finally time for this year's Hilma af Klint Safari!
Join us on a tour of the places on Adelsö and Munsö that played an important role in Hilma af Klint's life. The itinerary includes Hanmora Farm, the village of Tofta, and concludes at the Old Vicarage, now home to the Hilma af Klint's Atelier Centre, where you will enjoy the current exhibition and refreshments.
Accompanying the tour is Hedvig Ersman, a relative of Hilma af Klint and Vice Chair of the Hilma af Klint's Atelier Association. Along the way, she will share the history of the places you visit and tell the story of Hilma af Klint's life.

Painting retreat "Listen to your Truth"
Hilma af Klint's Atelier opens for our second retreat on Adelsö!
Welcome to a three-day retreat inspired by the spirit of Hilma af Klint.
Throughout her artistic life, Hilma af Klint searched for her own path through art. Discover your own gifts and how you may nurture and develop them.
During the retreat, we will meditate, paint, write, and find inspiration in Hilma af Klint's paintings and her reflections on spirituality.
Over the weekend, Marianne Lagercrantz will guide us through painting, conversations, and meditation. During the harvest season, we gather strength and inspiration for the winter ahead.
On Friday, we will explore, reflect, and engage in conversations about how we listen to the truth.
On Saturday, we will enter into silence in order to listen inwardly, meditate, write, and paint.
On Sunday, we will reflect on our experiences and look at the choices and decisions we wish to make as the next step in our lives.

Art Trail (Konstringen) 2026
For the third year running, Hilma af Klint's Atelier opens its doors as a gallery for local artists during the annual Art Trail (Konstringen), which takes place throughout Ekerö on the last weekend of September.
The artists exhibiting with us this year are Anna Eriksson (Anna Eriksson Art), Kerstin Persson, and Linda Wåhlander.
Open 11 am–5 pm.
Admission is free. Coffee and refreshments will be available at the farm for visitors wishing to take a break.
All of the artists are also exhibiting at Ekebyhov Palace near Ekerö centre.

Public Talk Hilma at Klint - the artist of the future
In connection with this summer's exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Ottilia Adelborg Museum in Gagnef, Hedvig Ersman of the Hilma af Klint's Atelier Association will give a talk in Gagnef.
It has often been said that "Hilma af Klint painted for the future." In this talk, Hedvig Ersman explores why Hilma af Klint's work continues to resonate so deeply with audiences today. She will also share insights from the current exhibition in Paris, whose opening the association attended.
The event concludes with a Q&A and open discussion.

Inauguration of the exhibition 2026
Two women. A life-long friendship. An artistic breakthrough.
On 14 June, we open a new exhibition exploring the unique friendship between Hilma af Klint and Ottilia Adelborg — two women who dared to follow their own paths at a time when few did.
Through art, letters, and stories, we follow their shared journey from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts to lives shaped by creativity, courage, and independence. It is a story of women's artistic expression, friendship, and the determination to break new ground.
The exhibition is accompanied by beautifully written texts that guide visitors through the remarkable journey Hilma and Ottilia undertook together, while each also followed her own unique path.
Welcome to discover a lesser-known yet essential chapter of Hilma af Klint's life — in the very environment where her creativity and presence still remain.
During your visit, you are warmly welcome to enjoy our café, offering coffee, tea, sandwiches, and more.
Admission is SEK 100, which also gives you free entry for the rest of the summer. If you would like to become a member, we will of course be happy to arrange this on site.

The Hiking day (Vandringsdagen)
The Adelsö hiking trail is 14 km long and is officially opened every year on Ascension Day. Along the first 7 km of the trail, the associations on Adelsö offer information, food, and refreshments for all hikers.
At Hilma af Klint's Atelier, easels, paper, and paints are available for children (and anyone else!) who would like to try their hand at painting.
The hiking trail is open year-round.

Inauguration of the exhibition "Hilma af Klint, les peintures du temple" at the Grand Palais in Paris
Representatives of the Hilma af Klint's Atelier Association have been invited to attend the opening of the first retrospective exhibition of Hilma af Klint in France, held at the Grand Palais in Paris.
Since 2025, we have supported Pascal Rousseau, the exhibition curator, by providing information and background material as part of his research for the exhibition. During the summer of 2025, we gave him a guided tour of Adelsö, and he also visited our summer exhibition on its final day of opening.
The exhibition at the Grand Palais runs until 30 August.

public talk at the Swedish Church in Paris
In connection with the opening of the retrospective exhibition Hilma af Klint at the Grand Palais in Paris, Hedvig Ersman will give a talk about Hilma af Klint and her artistic practice at the Swedish Church in Paris.
The presentation is organized in collaboration with the Swedish Art Society in Paris and together with art historian Arian Serck, who has contributed research for the exhibition.

We're bringing the garden back to life!
Welcome to join us for our garden day!
We will awaken the garden from its winter rest and prepare our beautiful grounds for the season ahead. Together, we will rake the flower beds, plant flowers, trim hedges, and take care of the garden.
Naturally, we will provide coffee and refreshments, and we hope for a sunny day filled with good company and gardening spirit.

We are building up a shop for everyone interested in Hilma af Klint. Here you will find books about Hilma af Klint both in Swedish and English. If you wish to deepen your knowledge of her life and work, you can purchase the latest publications about her here. New titles are added every year.
We also offer children's books about Hilma af Klint.
In addition to books, we sell postcards, tote bags, trays, and posters.
We also carry our exhibition catalogue, as well as a selection of books about other relevant artists (this year, including several titles by Ottilia Adelborg).
The shop is open during all of our public events.
We also have the opportunity to sell books that are no longer available in bookstores by sourcing them from the second-hand market. If you are looking for a specific title, please ask a member of our staff during your visit. We'll check whether we have it in stock, and if not, we can usually obtain a copy for you. If you have questions about a book that is no longer available from the publisher, you are also welcome to email us at info@hilmaafklintsatelje.org
In the future, we hope to offer mail-order purchasing. As we opened less than a year ago, we have not yet reached that stage.

Our premises are also available to rent for private events and other special occasions.

Researchers, Curators, Art Historians...
Are you currently working on a project involving Hilma af Klint—as a researcher, a curator planning a future exhibition, art historian, historian, or writer?
We would be delighted to welcome you and share our knowledge of Hilma af Klint . We can show you the places where she lived, provide deeper insight into her life and personality, and offer support for your research and work.
We see this as an important part of our mission.
Hilma af Klint's library
We are currently working to acquire two significant collections of books that belonged to Hilma af Klint. Our goal is for these libraries to become valuable research resources for future scholarship on Hilma af Klint.
- Hilma af Klint's own library. Our aim is to recreate Hilma af Klint's personal library by collecting the same titles that were part of her collection—not the original copies she owned, but the same books and editions wherever possible.
- Litterature about Hilma af Klint. We are also building a collection of literature published about Hilma af Klint after her death, following her recognition as an important artist. The collection includes everything from exhibition catalogues, art books, and biographies to novels and children's books inspired by or related to Hilma af Klint and her life.
The library is still a work in progress and is not yet complete. Our aim is for it to become an accessible reference library, available on our premises on Adelsö for anyone wishing to research and learn more about Hilma af Klint.

The artist studio
Are you an artist looking to get away for a while in order to paint? Come to us on Adelsö and get inspired by the place that was so significant to Hilma af Klint. Rent our artist's studio and work from here for a day, a week, or even longer if you wish.
The studio's approximately 60 square meters, with 4-meter-high ceilings and large panoramic windows facing north and east. We provide both tabletop and floor easels if you don't bring your own. The studio also has excellent indoor lighting with accurate color rendering, and there is an outdoor utility sink with a water tap on the side of the building.
Please note that since the studio's housed in a historic barn, it's not insulated against the winter cold. It's therefore best suited for use during the warmer months of the year.
